Hairstyle Suggestions for Indian Weddings

Traditional weddings are long gone. Some couples go as far as holding the ceremony under water, on the plane or amidst the most bizarre destination. But no one really needs to go through these hassles to have a memorable exchange of I do’s. Couples may choose to have a themed wedding – from Victorian to cultural ceremonies. Because of the colourful and historic feel of Indian weddings, these seem to be the most popular choice for adventurous and experimental husband and brides-to-be.

Aside from the elaborate props and details, the time of brides for the wedding preparation is spent the most in finding the right hairstyle. Looking through the pictures of Indian wedding hairdos, it is logical to think that Indian weddings call for long hair of the brides. Those with shorter hair may opt to use accessories or use extensions to achieve the traditional look.

Traditional South Indian Braid

Brides from South India wear their hair with a simple long hair that is decorated either with fresh flowers or elegant jewelleries. Women from the South Indian region usually have waist long hair that are kept glossy and thick, so this hairstyle should be easy to do. There are those who get extensions to have a long and thick braid, so this option should also be included in your list when you plan to hold an Indian wedding.

The hairstyle can be achieved simply by parting the hair in the middle and weave the hair from the back of the head. Keep the braid in place with a fancy clasp at the base. This ‘do wouldn’t look Indian without the embellishments, so hair accessories should be at the top of the shopping lists. The flowers can be used to have an ornate style. Jasmine and roses would look gorgeous when entwined with the braids. To complete the look, jewelleries can be placed at the top of the head for a more expensive and elaborate look.

Pinned Up Ringlets

If you have hair that is too short for an Indian bride braid, then the pinned up curls can be the best option. This style cannot only look flattering – it also exudes the softness and drama of a genuine Indian bride. There are different ways to achieve the look, from creating a messy or tight bun. Note that this hairdo is done with ringlets infused with the up do so it works best with naturally curly or wavy hair.

Doing it is pretty simple. Using curling iron, create perfect ringlets and stick the curls at the back of the head with bobby pins. Arrange the ringlets around the head according to your preference. This can be perfect in creating an illusion of an up do with style, making it perfect for brides with shoulder length hair.

Indian weddings don’t involve the use of veils. Instead, brides wear flowered plaits – a braid covered entirely with flowers. The secret is to carefully choose the flowers that would be entwined with the hair. It is easier to create plait if the stems of the flowers are at least an inch long. Arrange the flowers and secure with bobby pins.

Beach-y Waves

So you finally decided to hold a beach wedding. Everything’s going on perfectly, except that your hair isn’t long enough to pull off a classic up do that has been popular for summer ceremonies. Extensions are of course an option, but thinking of the added weight and humid weather may only result to having sweaty scalp and discomfort. Why not keep your ensemble light, simple but really dashing by donning a beach-y wavy hair.

Have you notice how fabulous and wavy your hair gets after a day at the beach? Having messy and tousled hair (arranged tastefully) can look effortlessly sexy and laid back. The good news is you don’t need to spend long hours swimming with the waves to mimic this look on your wedding day.

The best thing about the beach-y wavy hair is that it works for any length of brides’ manes. So this means that the look can be perfect for women who cannot pull off a chic, cute look because the hair is too long but not long enough for up do’s or any complicated hairstyles. In fact, shoulder length hair works best with this hairstyle. Visit the salon to get long layers needed for this look, as the beach-y waves won’t look really well on straight-cut hair.

Start by spraying on texturizing spray on a towel-dried hair. Be sure to spray evenly to have a rough texture. If you’re a bride with thick hair, be sure to spray less of the product to avoid having unruly hair.

The next step is to scrunch the hair as it dries. Every woman, as hair experts suggest, has natural waves in their hair. Scrunching it while it dries is one secret to find it. Most of the time, having the hair dry naturally would give the best results, but brides can opt to use diffuser or hair dryer especially when they’re pressed for time. Doing so would create a less natural-looking hair, though.

Scrunching the hair should be done by holding a section of hair in your palm, and folding it in an “accordion style.” Work your fingers towards the scalp then squeeze. You know you’re doing it right when the hair is left with a little wave.

Curling with an iron is not necessary, but you can opt to use this tool to create more curls. After all, brides need to have hairstyles that can last up to the last minute of the reception. Using a big curling iron would create the beach-y waves. Just avoid making perfect curls. The trick is to wrap randomly selected two-inch hair locks around the fat barrel of the iron.

Add more flair to the hairstyle by finger combing the hair to break up the curls. A little serum can be added to give the locks more gloss, but you should skip this product if you have super fine hair. Remember that serum can weigh the hair down and you may end up looking like you forgot to comb your hair after taking a bath.

Add final touches by setting the perfect waves. Do this by bending the hair upside down at the waist while keeping your head down. Put on light-hold hair spray at the roots of the hair and stand back up. Spritz the waves lightly to fix them for a romantic and sexy look.
